Ian Waite – Musical Director

Ian began his musical career when he was quite young. Born in Blaenavon, he joined the local brass band and progressed to win the Welsh Youth Soloist Award, at the age of eleven, playing the cornet.

He played in the Gwent County Youth Brass Band, progressing to become principal cornet player, a position he held for a number of ears. It was at this time that he established himself as a soloist.

Whilst at school Ian enjoyed many singing roles in various Musicals and always took an active part in the field of music. He was involved in Youth Orchestral work and at the age sixteen he joined one of Wales' premier brass bands, the Tredegar Town Band. Since then he has played in many notable bands, and indeed, was a member of the world famous Cory Band, when they were triple crown world champions in the 1980's.

In 1991, Ian joined the Tredegar Orpheus Male Voice Choir as a singing member. His knowledge and enthusiasm was soon recognised and in 1993 he was appointed the Musical Director of the Choir.

David Hutching – Accompanist

David has only recently been appointed as the accompanist to the Choir, having graduated from the University of Wales (Cardiff) with an honours degree in music.

A native of Abertillery, 22 year old David works as a peripatetic teacher in the primary schools of Gwent. David, since joining the choir has worked ceaselessly over a very short period of time, to learn our varied & sometimes very demanding repertoire.

We look forward to a bright musical partnership with this talented young man.

Rob Davies – Compere

Rob was born in Rhymney and was educated at the local Grammar / Comprehensive school. He initially graduated from Barry Teacher Training College & also the University of Wales, Cardiff, achieving an Honours Degree in Special Educational Needs. He has taught at Pen Y Dre High School in Merthyr since 1979.

Before joining the Orpheus as a baritone in 2004, Rob spent many years playing drums in several rock & show bands, playing at venues all over the country.

He particularly enjoys his role as compere, taking over the reins from the inimitable Ben Buffton. Rob’s relaxed style of delivery together with his seemingly inexhaustible supply of stories, jokes & poems help to endear him to Orpheus Audiences both locally & nationally
